YouTube Longer Shorts Video: 60 Seconds to 3 Minutes

Hereafter, the ideal length of a YouTube longer short’s video is 3 minutes. Will this help increase the Shorts monetization revenue?

From October 15, 2024, onwards, YouTube Shorts allows you to upload videos up to 3 minutes in length.

In this article, we will examine YouTube’s longer shorts and the values these three minutes bring to the creators.

Remember, the YouTube Shorts video format should be vertical or square in aspect ratio (9:16).

Let’s say you’re uploading a 2-minute video in horizontal format. So, now YouTube considers that video to be long-form.

If the same video is in vertical format, then it’s shorts.

Okay, now that we understand the context of Longer Shorts, let’s see how it’s impacting Shorts’ music, monetization, and discoverability.

YouTube Longer Shorts Impacts

Music: Audio Library

Like already, you can use any song available in the YouTube shorts library for 60 seconds. There is no change in that!

Beyond 60 seconds, if you use music other than the audio library, and if the content is copyrighted, you may receive a content-id claim.

This results in your video being blocked from YouTube, and it’s not eligible for monetization. However, it will not fire any penalties to your channel.

Search & Video Discoverability

Clearly, YouTube says there is no change in the Shorts Discovery system.

So, as usual, your 60-second or 3-minute duration shorts will appear on the home page; scroll up to watch next in the shorts tab.

Hence, you don’t really need to worry about the short video’s discoverability. If your video requires 3 minutes or 45 seconds, then do it.

Shorts monetization

Either a 60-second or 3-minute duration short video; if the video doesn’t have any copyrighted content, then it’s eligible for monetization.

But the question is, will 3 minutes longer shorts will bring more revenue?

Let me clear it out!

Generally, a long-form video revenue system works based on watch time. If the video is longer, then more ads will play in between the videos, hence the opportunity for more revenue.

But the same logic doesn’t apply to Short videos. The shorts revenue system works based on views, not watch time.

Therefore, the short video revenue will be the same for either a 60-second or 3-minute duration. The only opportunity you will have here is that you are getting more space to convey your story or points to the audience.

So, Why 3 minutes Shorts Duration

In summary, longer videos help explain more about you or your content to your audiences instead of wrapping up in 60 seconds.

As mentioned, if the content requires 45 seconds, don’t stretch it to 3 minutes.

I hope this three-minute update gives creators more room to convey their points. Please let me know your points in the comments section.
